Scripture Sunday

We decided to stay home from church today.  I woke up with a headache and Sam slept in until around 10 this morning.  What did we do instead of going to church?  Sam read for a while and then I gave Sam and Nick a sewing lesson.  It went pretty well for both of them.

Today's scripture comes from my personal reading:

"And though shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." ~ Deuteronomy 6:5

2 Years Ago Today...

I was baptized and became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Earlier that year (2014), my best friend's daughter went on a mission to Mexico.  Ever since she was called to go on her mission, I had a prompting to seek out sister missionaries in my area to just say "Hello".  I missed two chances, because 1) I am not that type of person to just go up to someone and say "Hello", and 2) I came up with excuses.  I told myself that the next time I see sister missionaries, I will talk to them.

On the first day of the 2014 Summer Reading program guess who was helping with some of the activities??? Yup, sister missionaries.  My kids saw them first and said, 'Mom, they are from the Church of Jesus Christ!'.  (a little side note: i had been talking about the LDS church for a little while and my kids did know about the Book of Mormon).  I chatted with the sisters that day and the kids and I went on our way.   The sisters actually helped throughout the month long reading program, so we did see and talk with them on those Saturdays.    On the last day of the reading program, the sisters asked if they could come to our house for a lesson.  I said sure and we swapped phone numbers and I gave them our address.  Well, due to scheduling conflicts, the sisters were not able to come to our house that week.  The following Saturday, Samantha spotted the sisters before I did and walked right up to them and asked, 'So, when are you going to come to our house and teach us about the Book of Mormon?" Lessons started the next week.

Samantha decided to get baptized first and her baptism date was September 20, 2014 and mine was October 25, 2014.

Hailey (Sister Mayle) and Alee (Sister Crook) were our sister missionaries.  We love and miss them a lot.

Scripture Sunday

Today's talks at church were pretty good. The three during sacrament meeting were about 1) Being Christlike; 2) How to become like a little child; and 3) Broken heart and a contrite spirit.

Here are some scripture references from the above mentioned talks:

1) Mark 14:22, 24
2) Mosiah 3; D&C 93; Mark 10
3) 2 Corinthians 7:10; 3 Nephi 9:19-20; 2 Nephi 4:17; Enos

Scripture Sunday

Today, we decided to stay home from church.  So instead of reading scriptures, I watched the Living Scriptures: Prophet series.  The DVD that I watched was "Praise to the Man":  Joseph Smith, Jr.  The movie was very good and educational.  One of the people in the movie was W.W. Phelps.   He was a member of the church but turned his back on Joseph and his fellow members of the church.  W.W. Phelps was the one that had Joseph and others put into Liberty Jail.  Once Joseph and the others were freed, they traveled onto Nauvoo.  In the mean time, W.W. Phelps was feeling rather down trodden and guilty for what he had done to Joseph.  W.W. Phelps wrote to Joseph and asked him and fellow members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for forgiveness.  W.W. Phelps was forgiven and was asked to come join Joseph in Nauvoo.  Later, after W.W. Phelps arrived, Joseph Smith Jr., Hyrum Smith and others turned themselves in.  Unfortunately, Joseph, Hyrum and 2 others were gunned down in the Carthage Jail.  At Joseph Smith Jr's, funeral, W.W. Phelps read a poem about the Prophet.  Later it was put to music and is one of the hymn's that we sing.  This is also Samantha's favorite song:

"Praise To The Man"

Praise to the man who communed with Jehovah!
Jesus anointed that Prophet and Seer.
Blessed to open the last dispensation,
Kings shall extol him, and nations revere.

Hail to the Prophet, ascended to heaven!
Traitors and tyrants now fight him in vain.
Mingling with Gods, he can plan for his brethren;
Death cannot conquer the hero again.

Praise to his mem'ry, he died as a martyr;
Honored and blest be his ever great name!
Long shall his blood, which was shed by assassins,
Please unto heav'n while the earth lauds his fame.

Great is his glory and endless his priesthood.
Ever and ever the keys he will hold.
Faithful and true, he will enter his kingdom,
Crowned in the midst of the prophets of old.

Sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven;
Earth must atone for the blood of that man.
Wake up the world for the conflict of justice.
Millions shall know "Brother Joseph" again.

Sister's Lesson

A couple of nights ago, Sister Hoopes and Sister Galbraith stopped by for a visit and short lesson.  The lesson was about strengthening our weaknesses to become strong and to humbly ask Heavenly Father for his help in this area.  The two scriptures below are ones that the sister's shared with us.  It was a good lesson for all.
"Nevertheless, the Lord God showeth us our weakness that we may know that it is by his grace, and his great condescensions unto the children of men, that we have power to do these things." ~ Jacob 4:7

"And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them." ~ Ether 12:27

Harvesting apples for homemade applesauce (this is a fond memory that I will have forever)

Deer and Elk hunting season for those in my family that hunt...the meat is oh so yummy :)

Halloween only happens one time a year...thank goodness for that.

Scripture Sunday

Sam and I went to church today.  It was fast and testimony Sunday.  We heard a lot of testimonies and I attended a little bit of 2nd hour and then rested during 3rd hour.  As I was reading scriptures during 2nd hour, the one I am sharing stood out to me and it had nothing to do with the lesson:

"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.  The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." ~ James 5:16

186th Semi-Annual General Conference

This weekend was the 186th Semi-Annual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  General Conference happens twice a year...the first weekend in April and the first weekend of October.  This is a time for all members of the church to listen to messages from the Prophet, his counselors, the apostles and all the General Auxiliary's.  I was unable to watch all 8+ hours of conference this weekend, but I will have another chance to view the conference on at my own leisure.  I am also going to be able to read all the talks next month when I receive the November Ensign :)
