This weekend is the 185th Semi-annual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The conference is broadcast live from the conference center in Salt Lake City, UT. Today were the first 2 sessions and they were wonderful. Below is a summary of what I took away from each of the talks...
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf - Are we making our discipleship too complicated? Avoid putting unnecessary burdens on ourselves. Keep to the gospel and simplify. "Exaltation is our goal. Discipleship is our journey"
Elder M. Russell Ballard - Key truths: Plan of Salvation; without the first apostles, we cannot know or understand the atonement of Christ. Keeping the commandments and covenants = priceless truths. Observe the Sabbath Day and make Sabbath Day a delight. Exaltation is the goal of our mortal journey.
Elder Richard J. Maynes - True joy comes from living a Christ centered life. Follow Christ's example and teachings with exactness. Christ can successfully mold us to how we are to be. As the clay on a potters wheel needs to be centered, our lives also need to be centered with Christ.
Sister Neill F. Marriott - Yielding to the Lord's way is the only way to happiness
Elder Larry R. Lawrence - Must be humble and teachable on journey of discipleship. Must be willing to act when you receive an answer from the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is our most honest companion.
Elder Francisco J. Vinas - In Jesus Christ our joy is full. Having companionship with the Holy Ghost is a good thing.
Elder Quentin L. Cook - No Righteousness = No Happiness. Divine Goals: Exercise self control and live righteously, honor the Sabbath Day, Gift of the Holy Ghost (Fruit of the Spirit).
Elder Robert D. Hales - Hold fast to the iron rod and tighten the grip that lead back to Him. Righteous choices keep you on the right course. Put trust in the Spirit. "Never deliberately fly into a thunderstorm". Exercise Faith in all areas of your life.
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland - Mother's love = Christ's love.
Elder Bradley D. Foster - Parents, be engaged in intentional parenting. Behold means to look and see. There is a difference between hearing and understanding. Hearing words are not enough, children need to understand as well.. "Children learn when they are ready to learn!" Never too late to lead, guide, and walk beside.
Elder Hugo Montoya: Go the extra mile, smile, express words of encouragement, invite others. The Good Shepherd is there for us.
Elder Vern Stanfill - Prepare ourselves with powerful light (Faith). Jesus is the light of the world. Trust in the Lord for spiritual strength. No darkness so dense or think that cannot be overcome by light. The gift of the Holy Ghost is a brighter light. You have the power to choose: Belief over doubt.
Elder James B. Martino - God does answer our prayers when we have a sincere heart and intent. Mortal life is not easy for any of us: Keep the commandments of the Lord, hold fast to rod of iron, daily scripture study, prayer and fasting.
Elder Dallin H. Oaks - The Savior's atonement helps us to overcom sin and death. The Savior willingly experienced all mortal challenges so that He may help those who suffer also. This was the essential part of the atonement. Mortal challenges are not just sins. Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot cure.
I am looking forward to tomorrow's sessions. I invite you to watch via lds.org.
