It's Friday

It's also the last Friday in June.  Can you believe this year is half over?  Neither can I.  But with work, lessons and running errands, the days fly by in a blink of an eye.
The kids have just finished up their 4th week of lessons.  They have done pretty darn good and have learned a lot.  Here is a look back at what they have learned:
  • Reading daily for 1/2 hour of their choice.  Both Nick and Sam are reading chapter books now and I love how they are challenging themselves.
  • Reading daily from the Book of Mormon.  They read a 1/2 chapter to a full chapter daily.  Right now they are in Alma 18
  • Daily Grams - Each day, Nick and Sam, work on about 5 different grammar exercises.  They are doing a great job.  They are on Day 19.
  • Science/Zoology - Nick is working on Lesson 3 in Land Animals and Sam is finishing up Lesson 2 in Swimming Creatures.
  • Jump-in - The kids have been writing about inventions.  They chose a specific invention, why they think it is either good or bad and are now trying to convince the reader why they should or should not try the invention.  Their papers should be wrapped up by next week.
  • Foreign Language:  Nick is learning Latin via Lively Latin.  So far, so good.  Sam is learning French via and through a workbook and game via
  • Life of Fred: Decimals and Percents - The kids have done great with this book so far.  They have already crossed two bridges and are now on chapter 13.  (Mom is learning a few things too)
  • Mystery of History Vol 1 - We picked up where we left off last school year and are now working in the 3rd Qtr.  We try to do 3 lessons a week and so far we have been on track.
  • Reading a loud - I have started to read a loud to the kids right before bedtime.  I heard about J. Scott Savage via a facebook/blogger friend.  One of the series by this author is called "Case File 13".  We have already read the first book in the series, 'Zombie Kid' and it was a hit.  We are now working on the second book, 'Making the Team'.
  • Delight Directed/Free Time - The kids have been busy with Lego creations, painting, baking, reading, playing games (both video and board) and tending to the chickens.
It has been a pretty good and busy month.

Summer Colds

Our family has welcomed summer 2015 with colds.  Each member, excluding me, has different child has a sore throat and runny nose, another child has a cough, sore throat and fever, and my husband has the headache, blah feeling.  Hopefully everyone will feel better when they wake up in a few hours.

Scripture Sunday

...well, not exactly.

Instead of sharing a scripture today, the kids and I watched "The 10 Commandments".  A good Sunday morning/afternoon movie.

I didn't realize that it had been just over a week since I last blogged.  The last two weeks of school have been great!!!  Both Nick and Sam are working diligently and are completing their morning lessons before noon.  The evening lessons are going well.  The kids have already had a couple of pre and post tests in history and a math quiz to be able to go on to the next 5 chapters in their math book.

On a side note:  we spotted another critter in our yard this week, that has visited a couple of days in a row...a deer.  Unfortunately I did not have our camera nearby to take a picture.

A Beautiful Day

Today has turned out to be beautiful!  The sun is shining, there is a cool breeze (which keeps the bugs at bay) and the pollen is not bothering me today.

June 1: A New Year

A new year??? Yes, a new year for Nick and Sam...the 2015/2016 Homeschool Year!!!  Today was their first day and they were excited to get back into the learning groove.  A few more subjects were added this year:  Daily Grams, Vocabulary, Latin, and French.  Carried over from last year:  Math (Life of Fred), Science (Zoology), Jump-In, Mystery of History Vol 1 and Spelling.   Everyday, even on break:  Reading and Scriptures.

It is going to be a good year of learning :)
