Always Learning Something New

Tonight, while reading from 'Stories of America', we learned about Captain John Smith.  Did you know that he became one of the first Governor's of Jamestown?  Did you know that he was a slave at one time?

While he was Governor, he made sure that everyone worked and he had a rule...you don't work, you don't eat.  This stopped the laziness of the men and help prosper the colony.  Unfortunately, Governor Smith was hurt with exploding gun powder and had to return to London.  Guess what happened to the colony after he left?  If you thought that everything stayed the same, you would be wrong.  The men became lazy and a lot of the colonists starved to death.  When Governor Smith left, there were 500 colonists.  By the time more ships arrived in Jamestown, there were 66 colonists.
