Farewell February

Being the shortest month of the year, February seemed to go by fast at times and slow at times.  On Ground Hogs' Day, we found out that there would be 6 more weeks of winter (but then we would anyway because 6 weeks from Feb 2nd is around the beginning of spring).
Valentines Day was sweet for the kids.  They received some candy and cards from friends and family.  Presidents' Day was spent at home, relaxing and being lazy.

The kids had a good month of lessons, lots of reading books and also had a week off too!

Today being Leap Year Day, we celebrated by getting braces on Nickolas's top front teeth and two permanent molars.

Farewell February...you have been good to us!

Awesome Read-Alouds!

Tonight we just finished a great book that our family highly highly recommends!  In fact we have read two books by this particular author and have fallen in love with the characters that are brought to life through the words and pictures of both books.  What are the titles, you ask?  Who is the author of these great books, you ask?  Who is the illustrator of these wonderful books, you ask?  Below are the answers to your questions...

We read 'The Invention of Hugo Cabret' back in December and it took us 3 days to read it.  Amazing illustrations and the story had us wanting more.
Tonight, we finished 'Wonderstruck'.  Two stories in one.  Amazing how the two captured your interest from the beginning pages.

We checked out both of these books from our library and am so grateful our library had these two books on their shelves.  Next time you visit your local library...add these two books to your pile of books to check out.

Wrap-up Week 33

The kids have lessons in the morning and late afternoon.  This week, the morning lessons were right on track.  The late afternoon lessons...not so much.  I take the blame for that one.

MATH:  Life of Fred - Dogs still entertains and teaches us.  I can't say it enough...We love Life of Fred!  The kids also did reviews with coins and measuring.

COPY WORK:  Improving daily and I am seeing vast improvement with each lesson.

READING:  Nick finished his chapter book. 'Who Was Neil Armstrong' and Sam read many different books.

VOCABULARY/LANGUAGE ARTS:  We only learned a couple of words this week.  The kids also did a review worksheet on contractions and mental imaging drawings.

DAILY GRAMS:  Again, we only did a couple of lessons, but learned quite a bit

READ ALOUD:  I am still reading 'Wonderstruck' to the kids.  Great story!

DELIGHT DIRECTED:  Nick was on the NASA website learning about John Glenn, drew a few spaceships and made a model rocket out of paper.  Sam made puppets and put on a puppet show about the Creation Story, read several books and colored.

Next week I am hoping to be more on track with the late afternoon lessons.

Happy 50th Anniversary!

Did you know that 50 years ago today John Glenn orbited the Earth 3 times in Friendship 7?!?!  I didn't know that either until last night.  The accomplishments since that day 50 years ago is astounding.  Here is a link that I would like to share with you...Friendship 7: Celebrating 50 Years of American Spaceflight

Ask, Seek and Knock

"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."  ~ Matthew 7:7-8

Thankful Thursday - Feb 9th

Today I am thankful for WISE.  My friend is currently being helped this wonderful organization and she is getting stronger and stronger each day.  It takes a lot of courage to walk away from an abusive relationship, especially if you have been in one for a long time.  I am very proud of my friend and am so thankful that she is safe and getting the help she needs.

Scripture Sunday

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." ~ Matthew 11: 28-30

Wrap-up Week 31

Another week has come and gone...where does the time go?

MATH:  This week, the kids started Life of Fred - Dogs.  We did 2 chapters and so far so good.  I can tell the progression from the books that this elementary series is going to work out well.  There are 6 more books in the series and I can't wait to introduce them to the kids.
COPY WORK:  The kids are still working on the uppercase letters and I have been very impressed with their work.  Sam has a little issue with the lowercase 'a', but she is working on it.

READING:  A lot of books were read this week and that makes this mama happy :)

VOCABULARY:  So far, Cartoon Vocabulary is a lot of fun.  The kids are learning 2 words a day.  I review the words that the kids have already learned and all I can say is...Impressive!!!

DELIGHT DIRECTED:  Nick did a lot of space investigation and was able to build a few space crafts from legos.  Sam played a lot with her stuffies (stuffed animals), helped her brother with his space engineering and painted.

READ ALOUD:  I have started reading The Witches by Roald Dahl.  Not sure if we will finish the book.  I will give it a few more chapters and if the kids say go-on...then we go-on.  If not, we will find something else to read.

Thankful Thursday - Feb 2

Today I am thankful for child led learning.

My son has been having a great time playing with one of his toys he received for Christmas this past year...Buzz Lightyear.  Because of Buzz, my son is now learning about space, NASA, building his own Apollo 13 out of Legos, built a space shuttle with SRB's and External Tank out of Legos, has used the NASA website for information and is having a great time learning new and amazing things about space.

I know that if I had made my son do all of the already mentioned activities, he would have not enjoyed it as much.

Child led learning ROCKS!!!
