Last Wrap-up of 2011

This wrap-up is for all of 2011.  As I sit here and reflect on 2011, I am amazed at how much was accomplished both in homeschool and in our family life.

Homeschool:  It has been an interesting year.  The kids have done a great job and are always full of questions, curiosity, etc.  They read quite a bit, do math daily, copy work and also have computer time.  There have been times when I would worry and stress that the kids were not doing enough, but then they surprise me and I know we are right on track.  I would say that our homeschool style is in between 'relaxed' and 'unschooling'.

Family Project:  This past summer, Scott and our friend David worked on the building of our house.  The roof and outside frame is all up and enclosed.  All the rooms are framed and ready for the next step.  Scott is very happy that he doesn't have to shovel snow off the flat roof anymore (so am I).

Family:  The kids have been pretty healthy this year, unless you count a cold here and there.  They have made a few friends, enjoy going to the library and love to run around the house.  Scott has been traveling to RI on weekends to work.  He has also been a stay-at-home-dad with the kids while I work during the week.  I have been working full-time for over a year now and would love to be at home instead.  Blackie is as cute and feisty as ever.

Visitors/Visits:  We had a few visitors this mom and dad, Uncle Paul, Chris, Melissa and Baby Tyler, and some of Scott's friends (i'm drawing a blank).  We also traveled to Maine and spent a few days with Uncle Paul.

All in all, 2011 was a pretty good year.  Looking forward to 2012!

Wrap-up Week 26

Did you know that if we followed the 180 day school year with the school district, we would be finished in 10 weeks?!?!  That would put us at the end of February beginning of March.  I think we will keep plugging away until May...with a few days off here and there :)

This week the kids worked on the following lessons:

MATH:  Played yahtzee and trouble also did a few chapters in Life of Fred - Cats.

READING:  The kids read books of their choosing and told back what they read or drew a picture of their favorite part of the book they read.

COPY WORK:  The kids are doing great!! I am so thankful we switched copy work curriculum and the kids are much happier.

SCIENCE:  We read about cells this week.  Funny how lessons sometimes intertwine with life.  We read The Lemonade Club by Patricia Polacco and it referred to cancer, which brought up a conversation about cells.  Not planned lessons are great!

DELIGHT DIRECTED:  Mostly the kids played, but today both Nick and Sam made pumpkin bread with Sam's little easy bake oven.  Their idea and boy did they have fun working together!!!

To end our week of lessons, Scott took us out to a late lunch/early dinner tonight.  On our way to dinner we saw a full rainbow!  I have never seen one in December and neither had the kids.  Such a special moment that we were able to share.  I just wished I had our camera.

The following is a song that I learned from being in the "Westmore Singers".  I was either in 5th or 6th grade.  I remember singing this during our Christmas Concert...

When I was but a youngster,
Christmas meant one thing,
That I'd be getting lots of toys that day.
I learned a whole lot different,
When my Mother sat me down,
And taught me to spell Christmas this way:

"C" is for the Christ child, born upon this day,
"H" for herald angels in the night,
"R" means our Redeemer,
"I" means Israel,
"S" is for the star that shone so bright,
"T" is for three wise men, they who traveled far,
"M" is for the manger where he lay,
"A"'s for all He stands for,
"S" means shepherds came,

And that's why there's a Christmas day,
And that's why there's a Christmas day

Wrap-up Week 25

This week ended up being very successful!!! The following are the lessons that the kids worked on:

MATH:  In the mornings, the kids played Yahtzee (to practice addition and number sequence) and dice math.  In the afternoon, after I got home from work, the kids and I worked on lessons from Life of Fred - Cats.

COPY WORK:  This week the kids started working in new workbooks...Book C Basic and Cursive Italic.  So far so good.  I really like the exercises and how they are helping the kids work independently.  At the end of the lessons, they are asked to grade themselves.

READING:  For reading this week, the kids had to read a book daily and either tell Scott about what they read or draw a picture about their favorite part of the book.

SCIENCE:  This week we also started Christian Kids Explore: Biology.  We only worked on Chapter 1: The Creation, so it is too early to tell how this is going.  After a few more chapters, I will write a bit more.

READ ALOUD:  We finally finished The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster.

DELIGHT DIRECTED:  Computer time, knitting (Samantha), playing with Lego, and helping with the cooking.

MISC:  Along with lessons, I had the kids do some specific chores this week...obviously they had to make their beds, get dressed, and brush their teeth.  They also had to make sure their rooms were cleaned up daily.

The schedule that I made for the kids helped a lot, especially for me!

Thankful Thursday - Dec 15

Today I am thankful for 2nd Opinions.

About a year or so ago, our children were referred to an orthodontist that was about 100 miles south of where we live.  (our kids have the state health insurance and this orthodontist accepted the insurance).  The first visit was a consultation.  The Dr. looked at both of the kids and said to come back in 6 months to see if anything had changed in the development.  6 months passes by and my husband drives the kids to their appointment only to be told to come back in 6 months to check on any changes.  Again, after 6 months, my husband drives the kids to the appointment and again the Dr. says...come back in 6 months to check for any changes.
My husband and I decided to ask for another referral when the kids have their regular dental check-up. Driving 100 miles each way was not a good thing and if we decided to continue, the cost of traveling would be too much. We got the 2nd referral and last night was our first appointment with the new orthodontist.  The consultation was great and our concerns are being addressed.  My son will be getting his work-up done and will be proceeding with corrective changes in his mouth.  This orthodontist does not take our insurance, but is going to work with us to set up a payment plan.  He is concerned about my son's teeth and wants to work with us.
I am so thankful for 2nd opinions...

Movie Night

Tonight we watched 'A Christmas Carol'.  My kids have been wanting to see this movie ever since I read them the book last year.  I loved Nick's reaction when Scrooge woke up Christmas morning..."Mom, he has a joyful heart!"

What Christmas movies have you watched lately?

Thankful Thursday - December 8

I am thankful for the memories of my grandparents.  My grandparents are no longer living, but I think about them all the time.  I always looked forward to visiting with them, listening to stories of their childhood, and just being with them. I look forward to being with them again.

What are you thankful for today?

Learning All The Time

What does The Little Mermaid have to do with learning all the time?  Glad you asked.  The kids and I watched the first disc (movie) and had a few laughs through out the movie.  When the movie was over, the kids wanted to watch the second disc.  This disc has special features which my kids includes games, behind the scenes (basically how the movie was made) and a section on 'under the sea creatures'.  This was the best part of the whole 2-disc set.
We learned about crabs and the many shapes they come in, eels, sharks, octopus and fish.  We love learning all the time.

Wrap-up Week 24

Not too much happened 'lesson' wise this week.  I was down with a pretty bad triggered headache. The kids did read a lot and also finished up Life of Fred-Butterflies.

Hoping we get back on track next happy to homeschool and to be able to tweak our schedules when illness takes it turn in the front seat.
