October is Out of Here

Another month has come and gone...again!  I sometimes wonder where the time goes. This month was filled with daily lessons, shopping days, library visits and a visit to the dentist.  Oh and it snowed twice ( a record breaker for the second snow fall this month). Here are a few pictures from October...

Farewell have been good to us.

Wrap-up Week 20

20 weeks into the school year...where is the time going???

MATH:  The kids are now working in Life of Fred - Butterflies.  They have completed the first 6 chapters and are doing great!

COPY WORK:  Nick seems to be slipping in this area.  Not taking his time and is using pens and crayons.  Not a very good idea.  He really needs to work on this.  So does Sam.  I am trying to figure this out and am hoping to have something concrete by the time Christmas rolls around.

READING:  No complaints here!  Nick and Sam love to read, especially at night in bed.  For instance, tonight the kids read about 10 books before I turned off the lights!

COLORING WHILE LEARNING:  I purchased 2 coloring books about the State Flowers and Birds for the kids to work on this month and next.  So far, they are doing great!

DELIGHT DIRECTED:  Nick worked with his legos and made a bumblebee transformer.  He was pretty excited with his accomplishment.  Both kids played with toys, read, computer time, etc.

READ ALOUD:  We took a break from The Phantom Tollbooth and began The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.  Excellent book!  We finished part 1 tonight and are looking forward to reading part 2.

2011 Gratitude Challenge

In November, I will be taking the '2011 Gratitude Challenge'.  What is the challenge you ask?  Each day in the month of November, I will try to post daily on something I am thankful for.  It can be a short post, long post, a wordless post, etc.

You are more than welcome to join the challenge.  For more information, visit the Garden of Learning blog.

Scripture Sunday

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.  But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.  For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed."  ~ James 1:5-6

Caramel Apples and Lessons Learned...

Today, the kids and I made caramel apples.  Well, I made them and the kids helped me prep the apples.  I got the recipe from the blog Women Living Well.  I saw the recipe yesterday and thought this would be a fun project.  I have to be was a fun project!!!  Thanks to Women Living Well for sharing the recipe!!!

The lessons learned from this project...

  1. This was my first attempt to make homemade caramel.  A candy thermometer is a purchase I will be making soon.  I think I overcooked the caramel because it got a little tough to drizzle or dip the apples.
  2. More counter space is least for me.  We live in a small apartment and the kitchen is not that big.
  3. Have everything prepped and ready to go before turning on the stove-top.
  4. Have a timer near by...using the clock in the other room does not help.
Isn't it great to try new things and learn from them as well...even when they are a sweet treat to eat!

UPDATE:  Most definitely a candy thermometer is a must!!!  The caramel was so hard that we couldn't even eat the apples.  The kids said they didn't like the caramel apples, but would rather have apples with caramel dip on the side....I have to agree with the kids on this one.

I'll not give up on trying new things because lessons are always learned!!!

Wrap-up Week 18

This week, both dad and mom helped with lessons...

MATH:  Nick continued to work on his lessons from Horizons.  Next week he will have 2 lessons and 1 test and then he will have completed Horizons 2 Book 2.
Life of Fred has been great this past week.  Sam is responding very well and Nick is tagging along.  I have decided to continue Life of Fred with both Nick and Sam.  Horizons is on hold for now.

COPY WORK:  The workbook that Nick has been working in is almost completed.  There is about 2 to 3 more weeks of work.  Not sure what I will have Nick do, but perhaps Draw Write Now will be the way to go.  Sam sure has done a good job with Draw Write Now and will continue this route.

READING:  Nick and Sam continue to read library books and have done a great job.

READ ALOUD:  This week I started reading The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster.  We read this about a year or so ago.  A great story with a lot of wonderful imagination!

DELIGHT DIRECTED:  Drawing, Painting, Playing with toys, Reading, Helping around the house...

Another great week...looking forward to next week!

Another First...

Our son has been afraid of dogs for quite sometime.  Lately, he has been overcoming his fear.  Today he went right up to a German Shepard and pet it.  He also took a little dog for a walk this afternoon...another first.

It is such a wonderful feeling to see my son's courage grow each day!

Proud of you buddy!

Wrap-up Week 17

Week 17 and we are almost half way through the year!

MATH:  This week, I introduced Life of Fred - Apples to the kids.  So far so good!  We are on chapter 6 and are learning quite a bit.  I'll be ordering Life of Fred - Butterflies pretty soon :)  Nick has also worked on his regular lessons and has done a good job.  I'm thinking of taking a break from Horizons and just working on the Life of Fred books.  This way he will learn why we do math and not just do worksheets everyday for just because.

COPY WORK:  Nick has had good writing and not so good writing this week.  One of these days he'll figure it out.  Sam has done pretty good with her Draw Write Now books.  I love to see the picture she draws.  Each day is a different one and it is great.

READING:  The kids have been reading their library books.  I have them narrate back to me what they have read and to choose one of their favorite books so I can blog about it on our Books, Books and More Books blog.

DELIGHT DIRECTED:  They played with legos, dolls, stuffed animals and played outside most of the week.

10 Years

10 years ago today Scott and I were married in front of our family and friends.  The day was sunny and beautiful.  These past 10 years have gone by fast and yet it doesn't seem that long ago we met.
Our marriage has seen life, death, laughter, tears, moves and everyday life occurrences.

Thank you for the last 10 years Scott!  I look forward to the next 10 and beyond!!!  I love you much!!!

Life of Fred - Apples

There has been a change in Samantha's daily lessons.  She wasn't very happy with her math lessons.  Not sure if it was due to having too much to do or she was overwhelmed or both.  So I decided to make a change.

Today Samantha, with Nickolas tagging along, started Life of Fred - Apples.  Fred is a five year old little boy that will be helping Samantha understand math.  What I like about this book is that the math Sam learns will help her in everyday situations.  Both Sam and Nick will learn why math is important as they get to know Fred.

There are 4 books in the elementary series:
  1. Apples
  2. Butterflies
  3. Cats
  4. Dogs
Once this series is complete, I am hoping to move into the next one, starting with Life of Fred - Fractions.

Scripture Sunday

"Ask and it shall be given you, seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:  For everyone that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."
